KAZAKHSTAN: Two repressive new laws .
Two new laws seriously restricting freedom of religion or belief were passed by Kazakhstan’s Senate, the upper house of Parliament, today (29 September). Both laws now only need President Nursultan Nazarbaev’s signature to become law. Previous similar laws were rejected by the Constitutional Council as “unconstitutional”, and were also heavily criticised by an Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Legal Opinion for breaking the country’s human rights commitments.

The main point of controversy that currently costs against the Jehovah’s Witnesses is their selective refusal of blood transfusion. This therapeutic choice based primarily on religious beliefs is regularly used to treat the Christians as criminals.

Babesiosis, disease most frequently transmitted by blood transfusion.
Babesiosis was added to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s list of nationally notifiable conditions in 2011. And, with no efficient and approved way of mass-testing the nation’s blood supply, babesiosis is “the infectious disease, currently, that’s most frequently transmitted by blood transfusion” in the country.

In just two weeks, the group laid a foundation in Amaroo and built a hall from the ground up complete with toilets, kitchen and a library.
“All the volunteers have travelled far and wide from all over Queensland and parts of NSW,” Gold Coast volunteer Lindsay Adams said.
