After 69 days trapped underground, rescued Chilean miner ready for NYC marathon.

“We thought we were going to die,” said Pena, who nevertheless insisted that he never lost hope. “I always had faith to keep fighting, to stand up to things, to do what could be done. I never lost faith in my Lord Jehovah.”

“Pensamos que íbamos a morir”, dijo Peña, quien no obstante insistió en que nunca perdió la esperanza. “Siempre tuve fe para seguir luchando, para hacer frente a las cosas, para hacer lo que se podía hacer. Nunca perdí la fe en mi Señor Jehová.”

As Chile celebrates, mine’s future in question.

Mining accounts for 40 percent of the Chilean state’s earnings and the rescue’s details were run by its operations manager, Andre Sougarett.

The Aug. 5 collapse brought the 125-year-old San Jose mine’s checkered safety record into focus and put Chile’s top industry under close scrutiny. Many believe the collapse occurred because the mine was overworked and violated safety codes.

Trapped Chilean miners: countdown to the party of a lifetime.

Sixty-five days after the San José mine collapsed in Chile’s northern desert, trapping 33 miners, the site above resembles a peculiar carnival. A clown entertained children in Spider-Man costumes. A van served burgers and sausages. Tents sprouted from the rocks. Reporters in fleeces spoke into TV cameras.

Chilean mine rescue, escape shaft expected to break through on Saturday.

The 33 miners have been trapped in the San Jose Mine, near the town of Copiapo in northern Chile, for over two months now.

Speaking last night, mining minister Lawrence Golborne said the rescue tunnel could break through in the next 24 hours, with the men potentially being freed as early as Tuesday.

Rescuers are planning on sending a video camera down the shaft once the drilling reaches the men to determine if the operation can take place without the hole caving in.

A metal capsule, dubbed the Phoenix, will then be used to pluck the miners out one by one.

A 16 person specialist rescue team, including a doctor, have already arrived at the site ahead of the difficult mission.
