Drill Breaks Through to Trapped Chilean Miners.
(Oct. 9) — Rescuers have successfully drilled down into the deep chamber where 33 Chilean miners have spent more than two months trapped half a mile underground, but officials say the miners won’t see the light of day until at least Tuesday.

Chilean mine rescue, escape shaft expected to break through on Saturday.
The 33 miners have been trapped in the San Jose Mine, near the town of Copiapo in northern Chile, for over two months now.
Speaking last night, mining minister Lawrence Golborne said the rescue tunnel could break through in the next 24 hours, with the men potentially being freed as early as Tuesday.
Rescuers are planning on sending a video camera down the shaft once the drilling reaches the men to determine if the operation can take place without the hole caving in.
A metal capsule, dubbed the Phoenix, will then be used to pluck the miners out one by one.
A 16 person specialist rescue team, including a doctor, have already arrived at the site ahead of the difficult mission.

“I’m exhausted,” she says. Ramirez has been living in a tent for almost two months waiting for her husband, Mario Gomez, to emerge. At 63 years old, he is the oldest of the trapped miners.
“I dream about the kiss and embrace I am going to give him.” She says that’s what keeps her going.

But the officials also urged caution, warning that unforeseen problems could slow the work. There could be setbacks in the drilling especially as the drills pass through collapsed sections of the mine or rock layers that aren’t well mapped.

They promised the families that preparations for the rescue effort on the surface would be ready by Oct. 12, and said they are planning for the possibility the miners could be pulled up nearly a month ahead of the official schedule.
