Belarusian gov’t tightens its control over Internet.

Eastern Orthodox 80%, Catholic 14%

Under rules introduced by president Lukashenko in 2010, Internet users going online in an Internet cafe or using a shared connection have to identify themselves and a record is to be kept of each user’s surfing history.

Authorities also have drawn up a list of Web sites that employees of state-run companies and organizations, as well as cultural and educational institutions, are forbidden to visit. The list includes Web sites belonging to leading opposition groups.

Russia: Jehovah’s Witnesses suffer 1,000 incidents of religious intolerance.

Jehovah’s Witnesses document over 1,000 incidents of religious intolerance since pivotal court ruling.
SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia—“I fear there will be many more acts of religious intolerance and hatred taken against Jehovah’s Witnesses because of the Court’s ruling,” stated attorney Arli Chimirov following the December 8, 2009, decision by the Russian Supreme Court. The Witnesses’ concern over the future of religious freedom in Russia is proving to be well-founded. Witnesses have documented and published online over 1,000 cases of mistreatment throughout Russia during the two years that have passed since the decision. An interactive map and chronological listing provide the location and a detailed description of each incident.

Blood money ?

Kids Given Plasma Despite No Clear Benefit

Many kids get plasma transfusions when there’s little evidence they do much good, according to a new study.

The researchers couldn’t tell why the plasma was used in each case. A typical plasma transfusion would cost a few hundred dollars, Holland said.

The Watchtower.

“Perhaps only Jehovah himself knows for sure.”

What if 3,000 people left a neighborhood of 22,000 all at once and nobody noticed?

Ask any longtime resident of Brooklyn Heights how often they laid eyes on a Jehovah’s Witness, they would most certainly answer, “Every day.”

Two Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kyzylorda failed to overturn punishments – a seven-day jail term and a fine – for holding a religious meeting in a private home.

Two Jehovah’s Witnesses appealed to the Kyzylorda Regional Prosecutor’s Office – Almas Zhakupov on 23 September and Tamara Magomedova on 20 July – after both were separately punished in the wake of a 27 May evening raid on a religious meeting in Magomedova’s Kyzylorda home. Zhakupov was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, while Magomedova was fined and ordered not to hold religious meetings in her home, Jehovah’s Witnesses told Forum 18.

FYI – ‘Gay history’ may be required in Calif schools.

Further, the bill prohibits instructional materials from “reflecting adversely” upon homosexuals — language that some critics say could influence what is taught about the definition of marriage. The bill is S.B. 48.

“Parents don’t want and children don’t need ‘LGBTIQ’ role models in school,” Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, said in April. “SB 48 is sexual brainwashing in the extreme. It’s damaging and nonacademic to teach children a lie — that homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality are natural and healthy lifestyles, when they’re not.”

WASHINGTON — Egypt has been added to a list of the world’s most severe violators of religious rights. The list was released today in the 12th Annual Report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF)/, an independent and bipartisan group that advises the State Department on religious liberty worldwide.

FYI – Atheist Chaplains ?

The report in the New York Times that atheists are looking for official recognition as chaplains in the US military in order to cater to the needs of non-believing servicemen is interesting.

On the one hand, it’s kind of absurd. Atheist chaplains? It’s a contradiction in terms. What are they going to teach? Non-belief? What services will they offer? Non-prayers and sermons on evolution? And what comfort will they offer dying soldiers, G-d forbid (oops! Even that doesn’t work). Will they say, “Game over. You’re going to a place of complete oblivion. Thank you for your service.”?

FYI – Annual Report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

In January of this year, the world witnessed a stunning triumph for the right to freedom of religion or belief when the people of southern Sudan voted on a historic referendum on independence. The referendum resulted from a peace agreement signed in 2005 which ended the 20-year north/south civil war which had been triggered by the Khartoum regime‘s militant attempts to impose its radical version of Islam on southern Sudanese Christians and animists.

In the mountains of Northern California, a field of radio dishes that look like giant dinner plates waited for years for the first call from intelligent life among the stars.
But they’re not listening anymore.
Cash-strapped governments, it seems, can no longer pay the interstellar phone bill.
Astronomers at the SETI Institute said a steep drop in state and federal funds has forced the shutdown of the Allen Telescope Array, a powerful tool in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, an effort scientists refer to as SETI.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Recently, the Selectmen of Falmouth issued a permit to a local Baptist Church to hold Easter Sunday services on a public beach. Of course, having gotten so much of their foot in the door for using taxpayer-maintained public property as a church, the Baptists have come right back asking for a permit to use Falmouth Heights Beach every Sunday, from 5 to 7 p.m., throughout the summer.

Muslim 83%; Hindu 16%; Christian 0.3%

Dhaka, Bangladesh – A judge has dismissed a case against volunteer health care workers northwest of Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka who were charged in March with “hurting religious feelings” after area Muslims objected to distribution of Christian literature at a health camp.

The Bangladeshi constitution provides for people to propagate their religion subject to law, but authorities and communities often objected to efforts to convert people from Islam, according to the U.S. Department of State’s 2010 International Religious Freedom report.
