Muslims, Mormons, and Jehovah’s Witnesses reported multiple cases of physical assaults, harassment, and threats against members of their communities in Bulgaria, while Protestant pastors reported harassment from Orthodox priests, who said the pastors represented “sects”, a US State Department annual report said.

Bulgaria-Annual report finds shortcomings in religious freedom

In August the mayor of Shoumen issued an order designating a property the Jehovah’s Witnesses purchased in May for public use and rejecting the Jehovah’s Witnesses application to construct a prayer house and fence on the property. The Jehovah’s Witnesses appealed to the Shoumen Administrative Court, which had not issued a ruling by year’s end.

Jehovah’s Witnesses also reported harassment from the local police in Kyustendil, claiming that on November 21, about 20 police officers entered the Kingdom Hall during the congregation’s meeting and checked the identity cards of those present. Bulgaria needs to address the gap between the human rights rhetoric and reality, the UN Human Rights Committee has stated reviewing the country’s third periodic report on the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Substantively, the Committee considered that reports of racially or religiously motivated hate speech and attacks it classified as worrying and that the information provided by NGOs suggests that investigation of these incidents is inadequate.

Bulgarian Nationalists Firmly behind ‘Assailant’ of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Bulgarian far-right VMRO formation has cried foul over the charges pressed again regional leader in the Black Sea city of Burgas, who has allegedly organized a violent attack against members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Borisov emphasized the construction of new churches saying that new Orthodox temples are being opened or existing ones are being repaired every week across Bulgaria.

Religious minorities suffer violent attacks from Bulgarian nationalists.

FYI – Bulgaria’s black market in blood is flourishing.

Once a deal is struck, a donor hanging out nearby—or at most a phone call away—is summoned, and turns up at the blood clinic masquerading as a relative. He gets a proof of donation certificate and sells it to the desperate family. The blood heads off to be checked, and if it is found to be disease-free it goes toward filling the clinic’s reserves.

Bulgarian Jehovah Witnesses: Nationalists Tried to Kill Us.

Last Sunday, five followers of the Jehovah Witnesses were injured in a clash provoked by a rally against their sect, organized by VMRO. The incident happened in the Black Sea city of Burgas, in front of the Jehovah Witnesses House of Prayer.

Attacks on Mosques, Synagogue Hurt Religious Freedom in Bulgaria – US State Dept Report.

Bulgarian Orthodox 82.6%, Muslim 12.2%, Roman Catholic 0.6%

It mentions specific cases of attacks against non-Christian temples – vandalism against the mosque in Nikopol in 2009, in Blagoevgrad also in 2009, in Karlovo in April 2010, in Plovdiv and in Kazanlak.

Cases of vandalism have also been reported with respect to Jewish schools in Sofia in March 2010, and a synagogue in Burgas in July this year.
