FYI – Pakistan bans ‘obscene’ words on cell phone texts.

Pakistan’s telecommunications authority sent a letter ordering cell phone companies to block text messages containing what it perceives to be obscenities, Anjum Nida Rahman, a spokeswoman for Telenor Pakistan, said Friday.
It also sent a list of more than 1,500 English and Urdu words that were to be blocked.

FYI – 10-year-old Pakistani girl accused of blasphemy for misspelling word.

A 10-year-old Christian girl, Faryal Bhatti, has had to go into hiding with her single mother after she misplaced a dot on her Urdu-language spelling test.

“The mosque loud speakers helped to spread the news and rallies were arranged in protest against the mother and daughter.”

In response, factory officials fired the mother and told her to vacate factory housing.

FYI – UN reports, dengue fever cases emerging in Pakistan.

Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with any one of four dengue viruses. Symptoms appear within three days to two weeks after a bite by an infected mosquito.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to prevent internet users from using technology that would allow them to privately browse the internet.

Pakistan: Call to ban Bible.


Muslim clerics recently asked the Supreme Court of Pakistan to rule that some scriptures have been added to the Bible and that they violate the Islamic nation’s blasphemy laws by depicting biblical figures revered by Muslims as flawed; they allege that these additions were inserted to show the prophets guilty of “a variety of moral crimes, which undermine the sanctity of the holy figures.”

Muslim landowners use tractors to plough over a Christian cemetery in order to seize the land illegally. A 29-year-old mother is drugged and raped by six men. In both cases, police covers up for the culprits. Government must act, Faisalabad priest says.

The April 18 attack occured in Punjab. Hundreds of Christians were forced to flee their homes. The attack sparked by quarrel between a Christian man and his son and some Muslims over false accusation of blasphemy.

FYI – Third church attacked as Pakistani extremists declare war over Florida Koran burning.


Yesterday afternoon, an armed group attacked the Catholic Church of St. Thomas in the military district of Wah, 45 km from Islamabad. The fundamentalists hurled stones and tried to burn the building. Bishop of the capital, we are Pakistani Christians, we have no ties with the United States. Young Christians: no hope for the future.

Thousands demonstrate in support of Pakistan’s blasphemy law.


Thousands of people turned out in Karachi Sunday to show their support for Pakistan’s current blasphemy laws and warn the government against changing the laws.

The rally, called by the leaders of several hard-line Islamic groups, closed main roads and markets throughout the city. Demonstrators demanded Pakistan leave its blasphemy laws untouched. They make it a crime punishable by death to insult Islam, the Quran or the Prophet Mohammed.

FYI – The Drone Wars.

Two years ago the Wall Street Journal reported Iran-funded militants in Iraq were able to hack into drones’ live-video feeds with “$26 off-the-shelf software”.

The US, of course, leads the world in drone use for both surveillance and combat missions. Attacks are carried out in Pakistan every four days on average. Many times, the US isn’t even sure exactly who they are killing.
