The joy of having a baby was short-lived for young Deborah of Nigeria when doctors said her daughter, Yvonne Omolola Ariyo, had a hole in the heart and would have to undergo a surgery.

The fact that the family belonged to Jehovah’s witnesses, a community that shunned blood transfusions, complicated matters. But a team of doctors at MIOT hospitals performed a bloodless open heart surgery on 7-month-old Yvonne last week giving her a new lease of life.

A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court

A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court decided Wednesday not to rule on whether minors should be allowed to make their own medical decisions in a case involving a 15-year-old Jehovah’s Witness who refused potentially life-saving blood transfusions.

A court-ordered guardian ultimately approved the transfusions for the girl last year, which led to the lawsuit. But in a 4-3 decision, the court said the case was moot since the order appointing the guardian had expired.

The American Medical Association voted Tuesday to oppose a decades long ban by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which prohibits gay men from donating blood.

The FDA ban originated in 1983 in response to the AIDS outbreak, when little was known about the virus and gay men were more likely to have contracted the virus.

Transfusions may increase the risk of infection after heart surgery in a dose-dependent manner, observational data from the Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network suggest.

As reported online in Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 298 patients (5.8%) developed major infections, most often pneumonia, Clostridium difficile colitis, and bloodstream infections.

The latest government data show that one of every 400 units transfused is associated with an adverse event like an allergic reaction, circulatory overload or sepsis. Even so, the share of hospital procedures that include a transfusion, usually of two or three units, has doubled in 12 years, to one in 10.

Yet at dozens of hospitals with programs that cater to Jehovah’s Witnesses, a million-patient market in the United States, researchers have found that surgical patients typically do just fine without transfusions.

Area patients charged thousands for blood transfusions

Worland said he hopes his experience doesn’t deter others from donating blood. Still, he said, charging $6,000 for a product he donates struck him as “a little excessive.”

For the blood alone, the hospital billed Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio $17,829. The bulk of those submitted charges, $11,172, was for seven units of irradiated platelets.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration announced last night the recall from all hospitals throughout Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore of some batches of human albumin, the main protein in plasma, manufactured before January 25.
