Legal schmegal, this is the way we do it in the Ukraine !

The Religious Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Ukraine faces the illegal seizure of a portion of its property through a landgrab scam commonly known in Ukraine as a property raid. Such scams involve the illegal sale of a property to a third party without the knowledge of the legitimate owners. The sale is then validated by the court and any appeals by the legitimate owners are dismissed by Ukraine’s Supreme Economic Court.

Enemies of the state.

Enemies of the state and ‘non-citizens’ are seen to come in many guises. In addition to that of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the persecution of Pentecostal Christians has escalated dramatically in recent years. Internal security forces monitor, harass and routinely detain those identified as practicing ‘illegal’ faiths.

World Without Terrorism: Is It Possible?

Joseba, quoted in the preceding article, was the head of a small commando group that planned to blow up a police station. “But before we could carry out this attack,” explained Joseba, “I was arrested and spent two years in prison.” Later, his wife, Luci, began to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses. Eventually Joseba joined those discussions.

FYI – Brooklyn Park Extends Money Hunt.

A fight over proposed housing in Brooklyn Bridge Park and how to pay for park operations reached a new stage on Tuesday.

The partially built 85-acre park was originally to be funded by adding around 700 units of housing in the park. But locals balked, saying that housing would detract from the park.

FYI – Targeting The World’s Worst Religious Persecutors.

The most important test of a government’s legitimacy is whether it protects basic human rights, most obviously life and liberty. The foundation is freedom conscience, including religious liberty. Governments unwilling to respect their citizen’s faith in God and view of the transcendent are not likely to treat people with dignity in other ways.

US embassy cables: Concerns over Vietnamese crackdown.

However, these situations are primarily “land disputes,” do not meet the statutory requirement in the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act, and should not divert our attention from the significant gains in expanding religious freedoms that Vietnam has made since the lifting of CPC designation in November 2006. These gains include increased recognition and registration of scores of new religions, implementation of a new legal framework on religion, and training programs at the local and national level.

Landmark religious freedom case victory in Russia.

Critics said the law is applied randomly and unfairly. At a news conference in Moscow, Kalistratov’s lawyer read from a Russian Orthodox catechism that described other religions as being “from the devil,” and said that if the same logic that prosecutors applied to his case were applied to such literature, thousands or even millions of Russian Orthodox believers would have to be put on trial.

FYI – Free of religion vs. freedom of the beach.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Recently, the Selectmen of Falmouth issued a permit to a local Baptist Church to hold Easter Sunday services on a public beach. Of course, having gotten so much of their foot in the door for using taxpayer-maintained public property as a church, the Baptists have come right back asking for a permit to use Falmouth Heights Beach every Sunday, from 5 to 7 p.m., throughout the summer.
