Act of 1905 and the sale of churches, France

Under this Act, “religious buildings (synagogues or churches) built before 1905 have become state property, which lends free of charge to churches, says the site of Europe 1. In fact, the state is required to fund the restoration and maintenance of buildings at its own expense. With the exception of operating costs, the work is therefore the responsibility of communities. Hence the proliferation of local referendums to launch a rehabilitation, as Plounérin in the Cotes d’Armor, or decide on a possible “deconstruction”, as in Saint-Chamond in the Loire. A scenario that was eventually dismissed. “
