FYI – UN approves resolution criticizing human rights violations in North Korea.

UNITED NATIONS — A key U.N. committee overwhelmingly approved a resolution Monday aimed at maintaining pressure on North Korea over its widespread human rights violations.

The General Assembly’s human rights committee adopted the nonbinding resolution by a vote of 112-16 with 55 abstentions. It must now be approved at a plenary session of the 193-member world body, where its adoption is virtually certain.

Since 1950, there have been more than 16,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses sentenced to a combined total of 31,256 years for refusing to perform military service. If alternative service is not provided, some 500 to 900 young men will continue to be added each year to the list of conscientious objectors criminalized in Korea.

Currently, there are 804 of Jehovah’s Witnesses who are imprisoned in South Korea. They have been charged under South Korea’s Military Service Act for their conscientious refusal of military service based on religious grounds.

Hawaii – Jehovah’s Witnesses invite public to Mililani events.

The Mililani Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, at 239 Palii St., will host the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ 2011 District Convention, beginning Friday at 9:20 a.m. All convention sessions, consisting of seven three-day events until Aug. 14, are open to the public and are free.

Rochester: Jehovah’s Witnesses to hold 3 conventions.

An estimated 12,000 people are expected to attend the three weekend conventions at the Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester Community War Memorial. The conventions will be held July 1-3, July 8-10 and July 22-24.

FYI – Ocean life faces mass extinctions, study shows.

“We now face losing marine species and entire marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, within a single generation,” report to UN says.
Time was running short to counter hazards such as a collapse of coral reefs or a spread of low-oxygen “dead zones”, according to the study led by the International Program on the State of the Ocean (IPSO).

FYI – UN Report: Internet access a human right.

La Rue said that he is deeply concerned by increasingly sophisticated blocking or filtering mechanisms used by some states for censorship.
However, La Rue said that child pornography is one clear exception where blocking measures are justified.

Korea: Lawyer files petition against law punishing conscientious objectors.

Baek, a Jehovah Witness, asked the court to review the current law dictating rights and obligations of conscripts over whether it infringes upon their Constitutional rights to reject the mandatory military service.

A lawyer indicted for refusing to serve in the military has filed a petition with a court against the Military Service Law that puts conscientious objectors behind bars, arguing the law violates individuals’ freedom of conscience and religion guaranteed under the Constitution.
