Russian Supreme Court Case – Liquidation

The Supreme Court decided to liquidate the centralized religious organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia, as well as all 395 local religious organizations of this religion.

Believers have already begun to prepare a complaint to the appellate instance (the panel consisting of three judges of the Supreme Court), which should be considered within a month.

Jehovah’s Witnesses former members tell court they were subjected to ‘total control’

Russia’s Supreme Court has heard the testimony of four former members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses who said they had been subjected to ‘total control’ in that religious organization, with no possibility to receive higher education or start a family, TASS reports from the courtroom.

• At its next hearing on April 19, the court is expected to study the written materials of the case and may hear the parties’ oral statements.

FYI – Misuse of Anti-Extremism in February 2017 – Sova Center

In February, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia adopted a decision regarding liquidation of the local religious organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cherkessk as extremist.

A local religious organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kislovodsk (the Stavropol Region) was fined 500 thousand rubles by the court decision under Article 20.29 of the Administrative Code for possession of extremist materials. . .

Apr. 7 – PROCEEDINGS ON BAN ON JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES IN RUSSIA ENTERS DAY 3

Today was day three of the ongoing hearing in Russia’s Supreme Court on banning the Jehovah’s Witness religious organization in Russia. The court will be in recess until next Wednesday, April 12.

In today’s proceedings, the Court heard the testimony of four of Jehovah’s Witnesses, who presented key arguments against the Ministry of Justice’s claim to liquidate the Administrative Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses and ban their activities.

RUSSIA: JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES BREAK LAW BY REFUSING BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

Jehovah’s Witnesses break the law forbidding “extremism” when its members refuse blood transfusions, Russia’s Justice Ministry said Thursday at a Supreme Court hearing on the question of banning the religious group in the country. The ministry added that if the organization is outlawed, its members could be prosecuted individually for extremism.

Russia’s top court puts off hearing on Jehovah’s Witnesses ban until April 6

Russia’s Supreme Court has postponed a hearing on outlawing the Jehovah’s Witnesses religious organization along with its 395 local branches and confiscating its property until April 6, a TASS correspondent reports.

Through its decision, the court satisfied a motion entered by the Jehovah’s Witnesses representatives to get acquainted with their case files.

United States Helsinki Commission yesterday spoke out strongly against Russian ban of Jehovah’s Witnesses

The denunciation followed Russia’s decision to criminalise religious literature, places of worship known as Kingdom Halls and criminalising the preaching work of Witnesses in over 2 300 congregations under the guise of fighting extremism.

Helsinki Commission chairman Senator Roger Wicker (MS), co-Chairman Rep Chris Smith (NJ-04), and Commissioner Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-08), in a joint statement yesterday rebuked the Russian authorities for cracking down on religious liberty.
