RUSSIA: JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES BREAK LAW BY REFUSING BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

Jehovah’s Witnesses break the law forbidding “extremism” when its members refuse blood transfusions, Russia’s Justice Ministry said Thursday at a Supreme Court hearing on the question of banning the religious group in the country. The ministry added that if the organization is outlawed, its members could be prosecuted individually for extremism.

A new medical technique is providing an alternative to surgeries that go against the religious beliefs of some residents.

So-called bloodless medicine and surgery is providing patients with an alternative to blood transfusions. New York Presbyterian-Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville is the only medical center in the Hudson Valley to offer it.

FYI – Cancer Breakthrough: Blood Test Detects ‘Cancer Symptoms’ 10 Years Before they Begin

Researchers at Swansea University in the United Kingdom have found that mutations often occur in red blood cells before any symptoms of cancer appear. These mutations can occur as many as 10 years before actual symptoms appear, making the test what scientists call a “smoke alarm” for cancer.

FYI – FDA works to defer blood donations in face of spread of Zika virus – JWnews

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it is working to defer blood donations from travelers who have visited one of the regions where the Zika virus is prevalent.

The agency said Thursday that the goal is to protect the blood supply in the United States.

The FDA says it also will put into place recommendations for U.S. territories affected by Zika.

The Food and Drug Administration has lifted its lifetime ban on accepting blood donations from men who have had sex with men.

“The FDA is changing its recommendation that men who have sex with men (MSM) be indefinitely deferred . . . to 12 months since the last sexual contact with another man,” the administration announced Monday.
